Buy used or repackaged: useful checks
Used, like new and refurbished do not always describe the same level of inspection. Start your comparison with the product’s actual condition and the seller’s commitments.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Ask for or read the precise description of the condition, defects, battery and accessories. Identify whether the seller is a private individual or professional, then compare the warranty, return, price delivered and proof of test. For a device, also check the lock, compatibility and availability of updates.
1. Translate commercial vocabulary
A second-hand product has already been used; a reconditioned product is presented as having been subjected to controls or intervention before it is put back on sale. The grades often describe the external aspect above all. Read the exact definition given by the seller and the list of tests announced.
- Definition of the accessible grade.
- Cosmetic defects described or photographed.
- Tests and replacement parts specified when advertised.
2. Identifying the seller and his commitments
On a platform, distinguish the professional seller from the individual and the marketplace. Compare its history, country of dispatch, invoice, guarantee and return procedure. Protections and remedies may differ depending on this status.
- Status and identity of the seller identified.
- Invoice and guarantee included.
- Address and cost of return known.
3. Check the decisive technical points
For a smartphone or computer, check the capacity, network compatibility, battery condition, updates and absence of account locking. For other products, adapt the list: mechanical wear, consumables, hygiene, available parts and safety.
- Complete reference and configuration.
- Battery condition or main consumable.
- Essential accessories included and compatible.
4Measuring the real economy
Compare with the price of a new equivalent model, not only with the former recommended price. Add delivery, missing accessories and likely replacement of a battery. A lower economy can remain rational if the seller offers a precise description, a simple return and a clear guarantee.
- Current price nine raised.
- Accessories and rehabilitation added.
- Guarantee and ease of return taken into account.
5. Separate price certain and repair possible
Fictitious example: a device costs 180 €, its delivery 12 € and an essential accessory 18 €. The known expenditure is 210 €. If a battery may need to be replaced but no quote exists, do not assume zero or an arbitrary amount. Ask for its reference, the cost of the part and the cost of the installation, then compare a scenario with and without intervention. Faced with a more expensive professional offer, also bring together the described condition, accessories included, returns and written commitments. A price difference does not alone measure the quality of the controls.
- Price supplied and accessories added.
- Unknown rehabilitation reported.
- Distinguished seller's commitments in a hypothesis.

Buying used or refurbished products
In France, professional refurbished sellers must provide information about the statutory conformity guarantee. Keep the listing and invoice; distinguish statutory rights from extra commercial warranties and check return conditions.
On receipt, match the model to the listing and test essential functions in time to report problems. Keep packaging photos and factual exchanges. Successful startup is not a full inspection; record symptoms precisely if a fault appears.
Fictional case — laptop
A buyer compares two refurbished laptops, checking battery condition, box contents and stated statutory guarantee, then saves the product sheet from the purchase date.

| Item | Occasion between individuals | Reconditioned professional |
|---|---|---|
| Description | Depends on the ad and photos | Grade and checks announced to read |
| Battery | To be requested or tested | Threshold or test to be checked |
| Guarantee / return | Depends on the status and platform | Occupational conditions to be consulted |
| Price | Often more variable | Sometimes includes testing and service |
| Accessory absent | Ask for the list of accessories actually supplied, rather than relying on those shown in a photo. | Check what this refurbished offer includes and the cost of compatible extras; a photo of a new version is not enough. |
Fictional example · No merchant prices
A battery replacement changes the budget
Fictional example: a €220 device needs a €60 battery and €10 delivery, totalling €290. Another offer at €280, with a battery suited to the need and delivery included, remains €280. The second costs €10 less, subject to confirming condition, capacity, seller and warranty terms.
| Expense item | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Product or basket | 220.00 € | 280.00 € |
| Extras | 60.00 € | 0.00 € |
| Delivery and setup | 10.00 € | 0.00 € |
| Total of included items | 290.00 € | 280.00 € |
This calculation does not predict future capacity or lifespan.
- Obtain a compatible battery quote including fitting.
- Do not infer capacity from cosmetic grade alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Does a grade "as new" guarantee a new battery?
No. Grade may only describe appearance. Look for a capacity threshold or separate information on battery.
Does repackaged mean repaired by the manufacturer?
Not necessarily. Identify the company that carried out the checks or interventions and what it guarantees.
What evidence should a particular seller ask?
For a valuable device, ask for recent photos, the partially masked reference or serial number, the functional status, accessories and proof of purchase if it exists, without unnecessarily transmitting personal documents.
