Marketplace: identify the seller before buying
On a marketplace, the visible platform is not always the company that sells the product. The offer sheet must be read as a contract with several roles: seller, payment, shipping and customer service.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Find the "sold by" and open the vendor profile before adding to the cart. Note his name, country, history and return conditions specific to the offer. Check separately who cashes, who ships and who answers in case of problem.
1. Mapping the four roles
The seller concludes the sale; the platform presents the offer and can provide additional guarantees; another actor can prepare the shipment; and the payment can be processed by a separate provider. Note these roles before the order to know who to contact.
- Mention "sold by" identified.
- Mention "shipped by" identified.
- Protection or warranty specific to the platform read.
2. Examine the vendor profile
Check out the name, country, seniority, sales volume when it is displayed and recent reviews. Read more about reviews for the same product category, compliance, packaging and refund. Only one average masks recurring problems.
- Identity and country available.
- Avis and detailed consultations.
- Return conditions accessible from the offer.
3. Control the product, not just the thumbnail
Check the reference, dimensions, materials, compatibility, language, accessories, and expected markings. A single page can include several vendors offering different versions or states. Compare the selected line in the basket to the one you studied.
- Variant and exact quantity.
- State and accessories explained.
- Unchanged seller between plug and basket.
4. Understanding the path in case of problems
Before you pay, find out how to open a file, the expected deadlines and the role of the platform. Keep the exchanges in the integrated messaging when it makes it easier to trace them. Beware of requests that invite you to pay or communicate outside the platform. Finally, check whether proof of delivery, a photograph or a response time will be required to open a claim.
- Localized litigation procedure.
- Exchanges kept in the official route.
- No payment or document sent to an external courier.
5. Identify the seller’s status and its effect on returns
One marketplace may carry offers from both traders and private individuals. In the EU, the distance-selling withdrawal right does not apply to purchases from a private individual. Check the status stated in the offer before paying and read that seller’s return conditions. Any additional commercial protection provided by the platform must be read separately.
- Seller’s stated status saved.
- Return conditions for this offer read.
- Platform protection distinguished from statutory rights.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Is the marketplace still the seller?
No. It can sell some products itself and host third party vendors for others. Check each offer.
Why does the seller change in the basket?
Some platforms select another offer based on price or availability. Always read the seller, status and delay just before payment.
Should we agree to continue the off-platform discussion?
This is not recommended when this results in loss of traceability or protection. Use the platform's official route.
Does every marketplace listing provide a withdrawal period?
No. Using a platform is not enough: check whether the seller is a trader or a private individual and read the applicable terms.
