Before a new purchase
Repair or replace device: compare scenarios
A breakdown does not automatically make a new purchase necessary. The decision starts with a diagnosis, then with scenarios that do the same service.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Identify the reference and the symptom, check the possible support and then ask for a detailed diagnosis and quote. Compare repair, new replacement and reconditioned over a common duration, with transport, installation and use. Keep undocumented lifespans unknown: a budget calculation does not guarantee future reliability.

Allow for access, connections and door opening
Before replacing a washing machine, measure the recess, the access route and the space in front of the door. Allow for hoses and follow the model’s installation instructions. To compare use, record kWh per 100 cycles and annual cycle count: a photograph and class alone do not determine electricity cost.
1. Distinguish breakdown, maintenance and incompatibility
Take the full reference, known age, symptom, error code and circumstances. Read the instructions for user-accessible maintenance operations: filter, setting, consumable or connection. Do not remove a live electrical element and do not bypass a safety device. For a device with overheating, damaged cable or leakage, stop use and request a proper diagnosis. A precise description limits unnecessary travel and helps the repairer prepare for the intervention.
- Notice and reference available.
- A symptom described without assuming its cause.
- Security and intervention conditions taken into account.
2. Request a full quote before deciding
Find the invoice and check the warranty or support conditions before paying for an intervention. Ask what will be charged if you refuse the repair, if the part is not available or if the diagnosis does not allow you to conclude. Make distinguish piece, labour, transport and possible second passage. Ask also the scope of the repair: does it resolve the identified breakdown or does it include a wider maintenance? Consult the ADEME resources to find repair routes, then confirm the conditions with the chosen professional.
- Explicit diagnostic costs.
- Room and availability confirmed.
- Scope and conditions of written intervention.
3. Compare three scenarios that do the same service
Create a repair column, a new replacement column and a reconditioned column when this option meets the need. For replacement, add delivery, accessories, installation and possible transfer of data. For repair, add transport or immobilization if these costs concern you. Choose the same capacity, essential functions and the same period. Do not charge the repair with the historical price of the device already paid: this amount is not a new expense caused by the current decision. On the other hand, enter a resumption or resale only if its amount is actually established.
- Same function and useful capacity.
- Distinguished new spending from past purchase.
- Unknown recovery retained as unknown.
4. Test the result with several durations
Fictitious example: repair costs 120 €; replace cost 450 € delivered. The old device consumes 220 kWh/year and the new 140 kWh/year. 0,25 €/kWh, in three years, without any other cost: repair = 120 + 3 × 55 = 285 €; replacement = 450 + 3 × 35 = 555 €. The electricity saving is 20 € per year: it does not compensate for 330 EUR d* initial difference 16,5 This example does not prove that the repaired device will last three years. Replay the calculation with a different maintenance cost and period, then examine the usage constraints and diagnosis.
- Distinguished example of a real offer.
- Price and consumption documents for your case.
- Explicit lifetime uncertainty.
Compare two solutions providing the same service
Fictional example: a €90 repair and a €180 replacement cannot be compared solely by their price ratio. Record diagnosis, included parts, time, transport costs and the service actually restored. Do not infer remaining lifespan from a price alone; keep this uncertainty visible and ask for the conditions of the repair.
- Identical scope and units.
- Assumptions and still-unknown charges identified.
- Terms of the specific offer confirmed.

The information to be obtained for each scenario
| Scenario | Initial expenditure | Unknown to be stored |
|---|---|---|
| Repair | Diagnostic + parts + intervention + transport | Future gaps and remaining duration |
| Buy New | Price delivered + installation + accessories | Future repair cost and actual use |
| Repackaged | Price delivered + missing accessories | Condition, controls performed and battery according to product |
Fictional example · No merchant prices
Separate diagnosis, repair and replacement
Fictional example: a repair quote includes €95 diagnosis, €65 parts and €40 labour, totalling €200. A comparable replacement costs €250 plus €15 delivery, totalling €265. The gap is €65. Confirm whether diagnosis is already included in the quote to avoid counting it twice.
| Expense item | Repair | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis or replacement device | 95.00 € | 250.00 € |
| Parts and labour | 105.00 € | 0.00 € |
| Delivery and setup | 0.00 € | 15.00 € |
| Total of included items | 200.00 € | 265.00 € |
No future lifespan or environmental benefit calculated; diagnosis is not deducted here.
- Clarify charges if repair is declined or impossible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Is there a percentage of prices that requires replacement?
This method does not set a universal threshold. A repair at a fraction of the new price may or may not be relevant depending on the diagnosis, the expected service, security, the associated costs and the possibilities of support.
Is a better energy class enough to decide?
Add the encrypted consumption, the price delivered and your rate of use. The energy gain can be small compared to the initial cost. The financial calculation does not measure the manufacturing impact of the new device.
Can I apply this calculation to a computer?
Yes to reconcile known expenses, adding backup, transfer, licenses or accessories if necessary. Separately check compatibility and updates: a cheaper device does not meet the need if your essential software is not working.
