Electric bike: journeys, battery and service after purchase

An electrically assisted bike must correspond to the journey and storage constraints. An announced range does not describe daily use alone.

Quick response

Essential in a minute

Describe your journeys, terrain, loads carried and storage. Have the size checked and try the bike when possible. Compare battery, recharge, equipment, delivery and service. DGCCRF draws attention to equipment and safety: ask for exact specifications and documentation before making a decision.

1. Write the journey before the data sheet

Note the usual distance, climbs, stops and what you are carrying. Add parking at each end and any stairs. A bike suitable for an occasional walk does not automatically respond to a daily trip with business. If you need to wear it, evaluate the weight actually handled, accessories and the possibility of removing the battery according to the model. Also compare the dimensions for the room or vehicle used. This description is used to ask specific questions to the seller and to prepare a representative test.

  • Trajectory and relief written.
  • Charge and parking described.
  • Portage and dimensions checked.

2. Check the complete bike

Check out the size guide and have the appropriate setting validated for your use. During a safe trial, evaluate the frame access, controls, braking and handling at the stop. Ask for the list of equipment delivered and the remaining preparation operations. DGCCRF states that the sale must be on a assembled and adjusted bike; only certain limitedly planned operations can be entrusted to the consumer, with prior information and a notice. Ask which ones remain to be performed. A presentation photograph does not replace the contractual list of items provided.

  • Size and settings validated.
  • Included equipment listed.
  • Preparation for approval specified.

3. Study reloading and availability of parts

Take the battery and charger reference, the operating conditions and the charging instructions. Ask if the battery is withdrawing, how it locks and what alternatives are available. Read the context of the announced range and compare it to your journeys; do not treat it as a guaranteed distance. Check that the intended charging location allows the record to be respected. For the occasion, ask for documented information about the battery and its history rather than just an appreciation of the seller's expected duration.

  • Accurate battery and charger.
  • Recharging instructions available.
  • Replacement and documented status.

4Calculation of commissioning and maintenance

Add bikes, delivery, preparation, useful accessories and possible initial service. Identify a contact person for the maintenance and check how the components of the assistance are treated. A close workshop does not necessarily accept each system: ask the question before purchase. Ask the steps in case of problem and the conditions of transport of a bike for an intervention. Upon receipt, check the reference and the parts before use and have the necessary operations performed by a competent person. Keep invoice, instructions and references so as not to depend on a single commercial page after purchase.

  • Cost of commissioning.
  • Compatible workshop and system.
  • Documents and references retained.

Fictional example: A costs €1,300 plus a necessary €80 rack and €60 preparation, totalling €1,440. B costs €1,450 including these items. The gap is only €10. Then compare ergonomics, permitted load and battery service; this calculation does not measure range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful answers

Will the announced autonomy be that of my journey?

It depends on the conditions specified for the model. Bring them closer to your terrain, your use and the expected loads. Ask the seller for explanations and keep a margin adapted as needed, without inventing a universal distance.

Is a delivered bike ready to ride?

The offer must specify the remaining operations. Check assembly, settings, equipment and control required before use. If you do not have the appropriate skills, arrange a preparation with a professional.

What to ask for a used electric bike?

Reference, condition, history available, battery, charger and documents. Have the components and preparation checked with a competent person. External appearance and a quick demonstration are not enough to describe all the parts.
