Electricity and gas: compare subscription and price of kWh

A low monthly payment can simply correspond to a different consumption estimate. The comparison should cover the same annual consumption and the same options.

Quick response

Essential in a minute

Collect your annual consumption, power and options. Compare the TTC subscription and the price of the kWh TTC, then the rules of tariff evolution and services. The comparison of the national energy mediator allows to reconcile offers on a common basis; keep the chosen tariff sheet.

1. Reconstitute a comparable profile

Collect an invoice and your annual consumption. Note the subscribed power, the rate option and, when they apply, the consumption in full and hollow hours. If you are moving in, clearly state that it is an estimate: housing, heating and occupancy can change the result. Do not send your full invoice to an unknown site to get a simple rate. Prepare only the information necessary for the simulation and use the same profile for each offered study.

  • Actual or estimated consumption distinguished.
  • Power and identical options.
  • Common comparison period.

2. Calculate the annual expenditure

The calculation basis is: annual subscription (tax included) plus annual consumption multiplied by price of the kWh (tax included). 3 000 kWh, a subscription of 180 € and one kWh to 0,20 € give 780 € per year. 120 € for subscription and 0,23 € per kWh, the total reached 810 €. The lowest subscription therefore does not always lead to the lowest total. These numbers illustrate a method; they do not describe any supplier or tariff available.

  • TTC compared to TTC.
  • Subscription reduced to 12 months.
  • Full and hollow hours calculated separately.

3. Understanding possible changes

Read the duration and scope of the fixed price or indexation reference. Check if the commitment relates to the kWh, subscription or part of the price, and identify the taxes that may change. Check the standardized sheet and the conditions rather than the advertising title. For a combination of gas and electricity offer, compare the two energies separately. A time-limited discount must be placed in your comparison period; keep the date and version of the documents used.

  • Fixed period included.
  • Index reference identified.
  • Distinguished promotion of the following tariff.

4. Review services and keep evidence

Compare the means of contact, payment terms, fees and ancillary services. A troubleshooting assistance can correspond to an optional service separate from the supply of energy. Use the public comparator for your municipality, then reread the supplier's documents before subscription. Archive the contract and the rate schedule with the simulation. On the first invoice, check the applied offer, the options and the services charged. A change in monthly payments alone is not the measure of an actual saving.

  • Accepted options identified.
  • Contact and payment adapted.
  • Tariff schedule and contract retained.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful answers

Is the monthly payment enough to compare?

No. It is based on an estimate and can lead to regularization. Compare consumption, subscription and kWh over the same period, then check the rules of the contract.

Does a fixed offer block all components?

Read the contract: fixedness may relate to part of the price. Subscription, taxes and other components may have their own rules. The term "fixed" does not exempt from reading the tariff sheet.

Where can I find a supplier independent comparator?

On the service of the national energy mediator, accessible from energy-info.fr. Inform your profile and check the supplier's documents after the simulation, as a comparison is not worth subscription.
