Baggage and travel

Suitcase: check dimensions, wheels and transport constraints

A "cabin" statement on a product sheet is not acceptable to each carrier. The suitcase must be suitable for the actual journey, but also for stairs, connections and storage at destination.

Quick response

Essential in a minute

Check the terms of your ticket, and then measure the suitcase with wheels and handles according to the carrier's method. Compare weight to empty, access to business and mobility on your journey. Add the applicable baggage charges to the budget rather than rely on the sole price of the suitcase.

1. From the rules of the journey

Lift the dimensions, weight and number of baggage included in your reservation. Distinguish the small bag placed under the seat, the carry-on baggage and the baggage in the hold. Trade names do not replace these conditions. For correspondence, check the rules of the different carriers; the same suitcase may be suitable for a portion of the journey and require further support. Keep the link to the conditions consulted and read them again before departure. No format presented as standard guarantees acceptance on all tickets.

  • Conditions of the ticket consulted.
  • Every route checked.
  • Overall dimensions noted.

2. Compare weight and practical capacity

The empty weight uses part of the available franchise. Prepare a business list and estimate the load before buying a large volume. Compare the external dimensions and the interior layout: separation, document pocket and location of fragile objects. An extension bellow can change the bulkiness and must be measured if you plan to use it. For a journey with train or bus, also consider the storage instructions and the ability to lift the baggage yourself. The volume in litres does not describe its width or your ease of handling.

  • Unladen weight known.
  • Loading planned.
  • Extension and storage examined.

3. Examine wheels, handle and access

Think about the surfaces of the course: hall, sidewalk, paved or stairs. Try the handle at your height when it is possible and check that the wheels do not interfere with storage. Two or four wheels describe a configuration, not a guarantee of durability. Look for the references of the replaceable parts and the terms of service offered. Look at the opening: a model that opens in two halves requires space on the ground. An outer pocket can facilitate access to documents, but does not transform a suitcase into secure storage for valuable objects.

  • Advance route and handling.
  • Handle and opening examined.
  • Searched available parts.

4. Test and identify baggage

At reception, measure the baggage, check the handle, wheels, closure and accessories. Test it with your load and check the total weight. Keep the invoice and photograph the condition of the baggage before a major move. Identify it without unnecessarily displaying any personal data outside. For items allowed or prohibited, check the instructions of the carrier and the authorities; the presence of a dedicated pocket does not prove that an object can travel. If the baggage contains a battery or a connected device, check its specific transport conditions before booking.

  • Measurement and weighing made.
  • Original statement retained.
  • Special objects and equipment checked.

Compare the required basket to several routes

Fictitious example: A costs 65 € and asks for a useful accessory to 15 €, i.e. 80 €; B includes this accessory 88 €. On 20 supposed journeys, this represents 4 € and 4,40 This calculation does not predict the strength. If A does not respect the dimensions of the carrier for one of your journeys, the deviation of the 8 Not enough to choose it: raise the external dimensions with wheels and handles, then the ticket rules.

  • Confirm transportation and ticket limitations.
  • Measure the outside dimensions and weight of the suitcase.
  • Do not treat the cost per journey as proof of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful answers

Is there still a cabin suitcase in the cabin?

No. The limits and services included depend on the carrier and the reservation. Check the terms and conditions of the ticket and measure the exact model.

Does the extension change the dimensions?

Yes, it can increase congestion. Compare the dimensions in the configuration you will use, without assuming that a closed format remains valid once extended.

Should we only compare the liters?

No: add the weight to the vacuum, the overall dimensions, the opening and the handling. A similar volume can correspond to very different shapes.
