Beauty and product information

Cosmetics online : composition, quantity and precautions

A photo of a bottle and a promise are not enough. The function, composition, precautions and quantity must make it possible to know what you are ordering.

Quick response

Essential in a minute

Look for the full list of ingredients, nominal quantity, function, precautions and identity of the person responsible. Compare the exact version and format, as a formula can evolve. Do not interpret an isolated ingredient as proof of efficacy or danger. For allergy, pregnancy, treatment or medical use, ask a competent professional for advice. Upon receipt, check lot, operculum, odour and period of use after opening.

1. Verify that the form allows a decision

The page must indicate the function of the product, its quantity, composition and useful precautions. A blurred photograph of the back of the packaging does not really help. Look for a readable and updated INCI list, the exact format selected and the application areas. If several references share the same page, check that the information changes with the variant.

  • Complete and legible INCI list.
  • Quantity corresponding to the variant.
  • Function and area of use specified.

2. Read the composition without overinterpretation

Ingredients are presented according to a nomenclature and usually in a quantity-related order, with specific rules. The first ingredients often constitute the majority of the formula. A "without" or "natural" statement is not enough to provide for tolerance. Compare two products for the same use and look for official precautions rather than viral lists classifying each term as good or bad.

  • Same use compared.
  • Personal allergens detected.
  • Marketing promise separate from composition.

3. Control seller, origin and promises

Identify the seller and the person responsible indicated on the product. Beware of a price far away from the market, of a different packaging without explanation or of excessive therapeutic promises. A cosmetic is not a medicine. For health products and medical devices, online sales follow separate rules; do not choose a treatment solely on the basis of an advertisement or influencer.

  • Identifiable seller.
  • Packaging is consistent with the target market.
  • No medical promise taken at the foot of the letter.

4. Examine the product before use

Upon receipt, check operculum, lot number, date or period after opening, quantity and precautions. Compare colour, texture and odour to what is normally expected, without using a product clearly altered. Photograph the package and contact the seller in case of leakage, error or doubt. Note the date of opening on the packaging and comply with the storage conditions.

  • Controlled operator and batch.
  • Date of opening noted.
  • Product isolated in case of alteration.

Fictional example · No merchant prices

Price per volume and budget actually paid

Hypothetical example for the same formula: a 50 ml bottle at 18 € costs 36 € per 100 ml; a 100 ml bottle at 30 € costs 30 € per 100 ml. The larger bottle has a lower unit price but requires 12 € more upfront. If you only need 50 ml and will not use the rest under the stated conditions, unit price alone is not enough to decide. Do not treat different concentrations or formulas as equivalent.

  • Compare the same formula and concentration.
  • Increase budget paid and price for 100 ml separately.
  • Approximate volume and duration of use indicated.

Can I buy a medicine at any site?

No. Online selling of drugs is strictly supervised and limited. If in doubt, consult a pharmacist and check official sources.
