Foreign currency purchases: conversion and fees

Check the currency invoiced, the proposed rate, the payment provider's fees and the final amount of a purchase abroad.

Quick response

Essential in a minute

Find the seller's currency and the currency in which you will be debited. If a conversion to euros is proposed, compare its total amount with the terms of your card or provider. Keep the summary; do not compare a conversion offered to a market rate that excludes all fees.

Identify currency and country of dispatch

A $ symbol does not distinguish US dollar, Canadian dollar or Australian dollar alone. Look for the currency code and the total in the basket. The seller's country, currency and country of dispatch are separate information; they do not allow the automatic deduction of taxes or fees on arrival. Check these items in the summary and the terms of sale.

  • Currency code found.
  • Country of dispatch read.
  • Charges announced distinguished from payment fees.

Distinguish the two possibilities of conversion

The site or provider can offer a converted amount; your bank can also convert a transaction invoiced into the original currency. Check who performs the conversion and the applicable fees for your contract. There is no universally better choice: compare the two amounts when the information is available and look for the conditions from the provider concerned.

  • Conversion provider identified.
  • Proposed total amount raised.
  • Map conditions consulted.

Calculate without confusing the meaning of the rate

For a fictitious example, if 1 unit of currency 0,90 €, an order from 100 units 90 € before fresh. 2 % of costs and 1 fixed € in this scenario, the total is 92,80 If the rate is expressed in reverse, use the reverse of the rate to convert. This calculation explains the method and is neither a current exchange rate nor a bank estimate.

  • Sense of the rate checked.
  • Distinguished fixed and proportional costs.
  • Separate example of a real course.

Anticipate a return or refund

Keep the total in the original currency, the amount debited and the conversion conditions. A subsequent refund can produce a different amount in euros depending on the rate and the terms applied. Ask the provider how the costs are processed and also compare the cost of an international return shipment. A small initial savings can be absorbed by these expenses.

  • Received in original currency retained.
  • Processing of verified reimbursement costs.
  • Cost of return considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Useful answers

Is the price displayed in euros the amount debited?

Check the last payment screen and the billed currency. A simple display estimate does not guarantee the final amount.

Is the proposed conversion to euro always advantageous?

Compare its total with your provider's terms and conditions. The fees can be integrated with the rate or added separately.

Can a currency refund differ in euros?

Yes, depending on the rate and conversion rules applied. Also check if the initial fees are returned.
