Home and bulky-item delivery
Buying furniture online: dimensions, access, delivery and assembly
The width of the assembled furniture is not enough. Measure the packages, access route and space needed in use, and check exactly where the carrier will deliver it.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Record assembled dimensions, package dimensions, weight and the space needed in use. Measure doors, corridors, stairs, lifts and turns, allowing for handles and handrails. Distinguish delivery to the building entrance, to the doorstep, to the room and with assembly. Check the time slot, removal of old furniture, packaging, notes to make on delivery and return costs. Keep the technical sheet and photograph the packages and parts on arrival.
1. Build a measurement sheet
Note the width, height, depth, movement of doors and drawers, as well as the space to circulate. For a table or sofa, simulate the volume with masking tape. Compare the measurements of several variants: a photo can show another format. Also check the supported weight, orientation, fixings and compatibility with the floor or wall.
- Full mounted dimensions.
- Simulated traffic space.
- Fixes and charges included.
2. Measure each passage of the journey
Ask for dimensions and number of packages. Measure useful openings, not just the frame: handle, hinge, ramp and angle reduce the passage. Photograph a complex access and inform the seller or carrier before delivery. For one floor, check elevator, stairwell, parking and possible authorization. Failed delivery may incur additional costs.
- Packages and known weights.
- Door, bend and staircase measured.
- Constraints reported before the appointment.
3. Compare delivery and assembly levels
The commercial expressions vary. Look for the drop-off point, the number of delivery points, the appointment, the unpacking, the assembly, the fixing and the evacuation of the packaging. Check the take-over of the old product and its conditions of preparation. Compare the price delivered and assembled rather than the furniture alone. If the assembly is at your charge, download the package leaflet before purchase and check the necessary tools.
- Explicit deposit point.
- Detailed mounting and fixing.
- Clarified packaging and packing.
4. Organize reception and possible return
Free the pass and plan a person available during the slot. Count the packages, look at the shocks, photograph the labels and formulate precise reserves in case of damage. Before complete assembly, compare color, parts and dimensions to the order. Keep cartons, screws and records as long as the set is not verified. A large return can be expensive: read who organizes the removal and in what condition the product should be returned.
- Number of packages checked.
- Damage described and photographed.
- Packages kept until checked.

Buying furniture online: check access before ordering
Measure assembled furniture and packages, then doors, stairs, lift and turning areas. Confirm who delivers, which floor, assembly, packaging removal and actual slot. Dimensions help only if the item can enter the home.
France’s DGCCRF advises checking price, essential features, delivery date, withdrawal terms and return costs before buying online. For bulky goods, keep the product sheet and order summary: return logistics and costs can be substantial if unsuitable.
Sketch the delivery route, narrow points and turns, including door-opening and package-rotation space. If uncertain, send the measurements to the seller or carrier and obtain an answer about the proposed service before ordering.
Prepare unloading and assembly space for unpacking and movement. For several packages, keep the expected list ready. On receipt, check references and contents against the summary before assembly.

Is door width enough to check access?
No. Include package length, angles, landing and lift capacity.
Fictional example — narrow landing
A buyer finds the package fits through the door but cannot turn on the measured landing. She requests a documented solution before buying instead of assuming access from door width alone.
Try the reasoning
Furniture fits the room but not the stairs. What measurement was missing?
Reasoning: The delivery route, including packaging and corners. Final dimensions alone do not establish access.

| Building floor | Outside | Who's wearing next? |
| Threshold | First door | Staircase included? |
| In the room | Selected piece | Unpacking included? |
| With mounting | Installed product | Fixing and packaging included? |
| Montage partiel | The space allows the packages to enter, but does not allow the furniture to be turned during assembly. | Ask about the space needed for assembly, the assembly sequence and the tasks included in the service before clearing only the final location. |
Fictional example · No merchant prices
The price of the part is not the price of the service delivered
Fictitious example: furniture A costs 280 €, with 35 € for transport and 45 € of the service required to place or assemble it, or 360 €. Furniture B equivalent costs 335 € with a service that covers these same needs. B is cheaper from 25 Only if the services are actually comparable. A delivery to the address and a delivery in the room should not be assumed to be identical. Please also specify access, packaging and presence necessary for the appointment.
- Compare dimensions and function before prices.
- Describe the expected level of reset and installation.
- Confirm in writing the transactions included in the offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
What measure is most often forgotten?
The turn between two passages, the useful opening of an elevator and the dimensions of the unmounted package are often more limiting than the main door.
Can I refuse a damaged package?
Depending on the finding, you can report or refuse. Describe precisely the damage and contact the seller, who remains the contact person for the proper execution of the order.
Is it necessary to put up all the furniture to see a mistake?
No. Compare first references, panels, color, dimensions and parts. A complete assembly can complicate the return if the error was visible at the opening.
