Financing of purchase
Split Payment and Credit: Comparison of Maturities and Total Cost
A low monthly payment does not make a purchase cheaper. To compare, you have to look at the total cost, the debit dates, the nature of the financing and the consequences of an incident.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Reconstitute the full schedule: immediate down payment, number of payments, dates, fees, insurance, if any and total reimbursed. Check if the offer is a simple payment facility or a credit subject to a different framework. Test your budget with the other levies already planned, not only with the first maturity. Keep the offer and the conditions before validating. An option presented as free can remain risky if it concentrates several debits over the same period.
1Rebuilding the full schedule
Note the day's payment, future amounts and their dates. Check whether the monthly payments are equal, whether a final balance differs and whether an option or insurance is added. Always compare the total with a cash payment of the same product. For a promotional offer, look at what happens if the order is partially refunded or if a product is returned.
- Immediate deposit included.
- Each date of flow recorded.
- Total refund calculated.
2. Understand the proposed contract
The payment in several times may be subject to different rules depending on its duration, amount and costs. Identify the lender or provider, consult the pre-contractual information and do not rely on the only button placed in the basket. French rules will evolve from the 20 November 2026 In order to extend the scope of credit to certain offers, a dated page must be re-read at the time of purchase.
- Provider identified.
- Nature of offer included.
- Dated conditions recorded.
3. Testing the burden in the budget
Place all deadlines on a calendar with rent, subscriptions and other credits. Several small splits can become a significant burden when they overlap. Keep a margin for unforeseen expenses and avoid using a new offer to cover a previous deadline. If financing is essential for a current purchase, reconsider the amount or schedule.
- Other integrated levies.
- Margin available after each date.
- No overlap ignored.
4. Anticipating return, reimbursement and incident
Read the costs or consequences of a rejected payment, the procedure for changing a card and the processing of a refund. A commercial return and a financing contract can follow separate schedules. Keep confirmations and check that the schedule is well adjusted after cancellation. In case of difficulty, contact the claimant quickly instead of leaving several deadlines to fail.
- Incident costs identified.
- Repayment procedure included.
- Lender's contact information retained.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Does three-time payment mean free credit?
Not automatically. Check the duration, costs, provider and total. A short facility and consumer credit do not necessarily give the same protections.
What happens after you get back?
The merchant and the provider must process the cancellation according to their procedures. Check the remaining deadlines and keep the confirmation of the refund.
Why Watch the November Reform 2026 ?
From 20 November 2026, new French rules must in particular extend the protection to more mini-credits and split payments. Check the rule in force on the date of the contract.
