Board game: players, rules and pre-purchase editing
A popular box does not guarantee a good evening with your group. The choice depends on the people present, the time available and the desire to learn rules, as well as the theme.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Check out the official rules, check language and edition, and then distinguish the full game and extension. For children, read the warnings and the expected age. On occasion, compare the actual content with the box's inventory.
1. Describe the group and session
Note the most frequent number of people, their experience and the time available, including explanation and installation. A range of players on a box does not tell how a game is going with your specific staff. Look in the rules if a variant is necessary for two or if some roles impose a larger group. For a short evening, think about storage and the possibility of interrupting a game. Distinguish competition, cooperation and discussion according to the group's wishes. This description avoids buying only on the theme or on a general popularity.
- Usually defined.
- Total estimated time.
- Type of experience chosen.
2. Read the rules and warnings
Open the rules published by the publisher when available. Review the course of a trick, the information to read and the way to count points. An announced duration depends on the players and does not constitute a guarantee for a first part. For a child, distinguish the indication of difficulty and safety warning; the presence of small pieces may impose restrictions independent of the interest in the theme. DGCCRF recommends to choose age-appropriate toys and read the warnings. Also check the supervision needs and the specific instructions of the product.
- Rules consulted.
- Reading and difficulty assessed.
- Warnings included.
3. Identify language, editing and content
Take up the full name, language, editor and edition. Two close boxes may contain different rules or components. Check if the offer is a stand-alone game, an extension, an accessory or a reload of content. An extension may require a specific basic game; ask for compatibility before ordering. For a game dependent on an application or online access, check technical conditions and account requirements. Review consumables and items to write or destroy if you want to replay or buy in second hand.
- Language and edition noted.
- Standalone game or extension identified.
- Dependencies and consumables verified.
4. Control the material and prepare the first part
When received, compare the content with the official inventory: cards, pawns, trays and booklet. Report missing items with the edition reference and a precise description. For a second-hand purchase, ask for this inventory before sale and examine the condition of the components that carry game information. Then prepare a suitable space and explanation of the first round rather than discover the whole rule during the session. Keep the useful bags or organizers and check the storage. Additional protection is required only if it meets your frequency of use and the exact format of the cards.
- Close inventory of the box.
- First session prepared.
- Storage suitable for equipment.

Fictional example · No merchant prices
An extension does not replace the base game
Ficile example: a box A to 24 € is an extension requiring a basic game to 36 €, i.e. 60 If you don't have it, a standalone B box at 42 € request 42 These two budgets do not show that the experiences are equivalent: compare rules, players, language and desired duration. If you already have the compatible base game, the extension may only ask 24 € extra.
- Independent check or extension on the exact box.
- Confirm editing and language of the compatible base game.
- Compare the extra budget according to your actual collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Is an extension enough to play?
Not always. Read the compatibility statement and the basic game required. Some boxes are stand-alone, others only add hardware to an existing game.
Does age on the box only indicate the difficulty?
No: Security warnings should also be read. An indication of difficulty and a restriction on small parts answer different questions.
Why check the language if the maps seem illustrated?
Rules, effects and components may contain text. Check the complete contents of the edition; a photograph of the cover is not enough.
