Product safety and recalls: pre- and post-purchase controls
A good product sheet is not enough to establish the safety of an item. For sensitive categories, the exact reference, warnings, responsible seller and public reminders must be consulted.
Quick response
Essential in a minute
Identify the exact reference, the manufacturer or responsible, the intended use and the warnings. Beware of the very incomplete sheets, inconsistent translations and sellers that are impossible to identify. Before using a sensitive product, look for its reference on ReminderConso and keep invoice, package leaflet and lot number. After purchasing, register with the manufacturer's alerts when they exist and check any notification received from an official source. Do not use an item whose essential notice or characteristics contradict the order form.
1. Require usable identification
Look for the brand, model, reference, contact details of the operator responsible and available traceability information. A vague description complicates the control of a recall and the recourse in case of a problem.
- Model or reference recognizable.
- Seller and responsible identified.
- Photos consistent with the description.
2. Check usage and warnings
For a toy, check age and small parts; for a device, voltage, grip, power and package insert; for a cosmetic, composition and precautions. Adapt the checklist to the category and person who will use the product.
- The intended use is clearly indicated.
- Intelligible notice available.
- Compatibility with the place of use.
3. Search for a reminder by reference
ReminderConso publishes French alerts for many categories. Compare the brand, model, lot, dates and photos: a reminder can only target a series. Follow the driving indicated on the official card.
- Brand and model sought.
- Batch or period compared.
- Conduct to be read on the official source.
4. Keep information after purchase
Keep the invoice, package leaflet and package bearing the lot or reference when it is useful. In case of alert, stop use according to instructions and contact the indicated channel. A product recall should not be treated as a mere commercial return.
- Invoice and seller recognizable.
- Photographed lot so relevant.
- Isolated product if required.
5. Follow the instructions for the specific recall
If the brand, model and batch match a recall notice, set the product aside and stop using it. Keep the available label, batch number, packaging and proof of purchase. Read the instructions and procedure deadline in the official notice: you may need to return the product, dispose of it as instructed or contact customer service. Do not automatically post a dangerous item back without instructions from the trader.
- Reference and batch matched against the official notice.
- Use stopped and product set aside.
- Return, disposal or contact instructions read.

Check a recall for a product bought online
Match a recall to your exact product. Safety Gate, the EU alert system for dangerous non-food products, publishes product type, risk and measures. Compare brand, model, images and any stated batch or barcode.
If the reference matches, follow official or seller instructions: stop use, return, repair or another measure. Keep proof of purchase and a label photo. No search result does not prove safety; faults are not all known at the same time.
Similarity is not a match: one brand may sell several close models. Photograph the label and compare every available identifier. If the batch is unreadable, ask the seller or manufacturer using the remaining details before excluding your item from the recall.
Safety Gate covers non-food products; food and medicines use other alert systems. For used goods or gifts, still identify the exact reference even without an invoice. Proof of purchase helps a claim, but its absence is no reason to ignore a safety instruction.
- Identify
- Brand, model, batch and barcode of your product.
- Compare
- Risk description and reference in the Safety Gate alert.
- Act
- Follow the stated measure and keep a record.
Should you improvise a repair when a recall mentions a fault?
Follow the official measure for that model: stopping use, return or specified work. An improvised repair does not replace the recall solution.
Try the reasoning
A recall names a similar reference. Which identifier should you compare?
Reasoning: Match model, batch and other published identifiers to your item. Follow the applicable recall procedure without assuming equivalence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Useful answers
Does the absence of a recall prove that a product is safe?
No. It only means that no corresponding alerts were found at the time of the search. Also check the form, package leaflet, traceability and use.
Why do we need the exact reference?
A recall may be for a specific model, batch or period. The trade name alone may be too broad.
What if my product matches a recall?
Follow the course to keep published on the official card: stop use, return, repair or other measure depending on the risk.
Can I immediately discard or return a recalled product?
First read the recall notice matching your reference and batch. Instructions vary: return to a shop, dispose of the product as directed or contact customer service. Keep identification details and any available proof of purchase.
